Aphrodite celebrates International Women’s Day today – March 8, 2013
As we approach our own one year anniversary at Aphrodite, we are celebrating International Women’s Day by donating 10% of all of today’s sales proceeds to the Antigonish Women’s Resource Centre. We will also make a donation of new clothing in the value of $1,000. This clothing can be used by women who are re-entering the work force or have other needs that can be helped by our contribution.
Why did we choose the Antigonish Women’s Resource Centre?
In Canada we are fortunate to have laws that protect our rights and give us a relatively equal stature to men in terms of wages and opportunities – although it remains a controversial subject as injustices still exist and many of us have or continue to experience them. And there are many women who still live in poverty and destitution right here in our communities. The Antigonish Women’s Resource Centre was established in 1983 to provide woman-centered services that support women in making positive changes in their lives. Through their services they address the broad and often complex range of issues facing women and their children.

A summary in Wikipedia states that International Women’s Day (IWD), originally called International Working Women’s Day, is marked on March 8 every year. In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women’s economic, political and social achievements. Started as a Socialist political event, the holiday blended in the culture of many countries, primarily Eastern Europe, Russia, and the former Soviet bloc. In some regions, the day lost its political flavor, and became simply an occasion for men to express their love for women in a way somewhat similar to a mixture of Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day. In other regions, however, the political and human rights theme designated by the United Nations. runs strong, and political and social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide are brought out and examined in a hopeful manner.

Today, let’s all reflect on the plight of our sisters in other regions of the world where women continue to struggle for the most basic of freedoms and rights. We say a prayer for all of you.
