At Aphrodite we continue our tradition to bring you a mix of great art, design and creativity by featuring new artists from across Canada. We have just installed a new mini exhibit of paintings by Cem Basarir, a Canadian contemporary urban painter who celebrates life in the city and environs.  Originally from Turkey, Cem brings his own unique brand of creativity to the canvas where he reduces complex images to their very essence of light and composition. He invites the viewer to enter his paintings and participate in an encounter that transcends time and space. Cem’s masterful technique creates precise and carefully nuanced details in a sea of colour and form.  Above all, Cem adds a fresh and original approach to the art scene in Canada.

I discovered Cem through my daughter Dana who now lives and works in Toronto and is a neighbour and friend of Cem and his family. While there on a recent buying trip Dana introduced me to his work. I was thrilled to have an opportunity to bring a collection of his paintings to Aphrodite and introduce him to the people of this region. The exhibition will be up until early August. Don’t miss an opportunity to enjoy these paintings during that time. We will all welcome your comments.

In support of The Pictou County Early Intervention Program

Yes it happened again. We were invited back – or did we invite ourselves? The lovely ladies of the County dressed up in Aphrodite finery for a good cause – The Pictou County Early Intervention Program. Please click on the title and consider making your own contribution. They sure could use your help!

On June 6 we packed up half the store and put on the show. But we weren’t alone. The famous Trudy Gallagher of Bejewel travelled back here from Fredericton and performed her magic, adding gorgeous jewels to our outfits and telling us about the stones and her inspiration. And our host had to ham it up for the cameras too (because he wasn’t getting enough attention). That would be the pirate who keeps showing up unexpectedly at the most inappropriate times. And he wasn’t always alone.

Enjoy the show and be sure to visit and see how these outfits look on you – especially with some of Trudy’s new jewels.  Hope to see you soon!
