Before you make the trek to Halifax/Dartmouth to do your Christmas shopping consider buying locally!
Here’s why.
The independent merchants on Main Street and throughout the town, rely on your support to stay alive and flourish. When you shop locally you are giving us your vote of confidence and enabling us to continue to provide you with great selections, convenience and a vibrant downtown that in turn attracts other businesses that will do the same.
Here’s how it works:
When you purchase from your local merchants – often at lower prices than you pay in Halifax because our overheads are lower – then we have a greater sell through and can reinvest in a great selection for next season too. Conversely, if you take your purchases elsewhere and our sales go down, then we have no choice but to shrink our inventory for the next season thus beginning a downward cycle that can end up in the demise of the business.
Think of it as nurturing a garden. Once the seeds are planted the garden won’t grow unless it is regularly maintained and loved.
There’s a whole lot more in this town than you might think! Stroll the Main. Have a look!
So before you drive off to Halifax to spend your hard earned dollars in the franchise stores in the malls, have a look in your town – and invest in the future of Antigonish. We independent retailers are taking risks, creating jobs, attracting visitors and tourists, entertaining the public and bringing great products to your doorstep. Then if you’re still wanting for more – go ahead and make that trip. Better yet, let us know what we’re missing and maybe we can bring it to you in the future.
We’re all partners in the future of our town. Let’s work together to make it the best it can be.
Wishing you calm and joy for your holiday preparations.
I can’t help but think that if we could bring citygirl on board to support the merit of spending our dollars locally that her energy and attentiveness could be a positive. So if there’s nothing personal going on here, I’m sending an invite to the anonymous citygirl to send me an email and accept a lunch invite. I’m not an anonymous kind of person so my email is here.
I like your explanation, Tiiu. We all know these realities, but need to act on them. For me, the drive to Halifax is definitely a disincentive, especially in the winter.
Thanks for your replies everyone. I’m glad to know you’re reading the blogs even though we might not always agree. That’s what makes the world go round. Happy holidays!
Hi Tiiu…for whatever reason, I am going through many of your current and earlier articles and just came across something completely unexpected, this being a nasty comment from what I perceive to be someone called city girl. I found it nasty, rude, disrespectful and in bad taste, and without any merit other than this person seems to be a bitter, small minded person. Personally I would like to throw a pie in her face, but I am here in NY and the pie throwing distance from Brooklyn to where she is at is a bit too far. But it did enter my mind….actually it would be a waste of a perfectly good pie even if would have improved her ugly face by covering it up……..So there!!!! Daniel
What bull, do u really think we needed that big explanation, u are so condesending.

Go back to your big city Toronto, Diana. You aren’t from here and we would welcome you except you shouldn’t be welcomed with your attitude.
