Everyone’s been asking….here’s the scoop!
As you know this has been a very eventful year for Aphrodite. Now that Aphrodite is well ensconced in Pictou people from everywhere are asking me “How’s it going?” This might be a good time to give all of you an update. The short answer is that it’s going really well! I’m cautiously optimistic as we’re still in our early days but sales have been brisk and our regular customers are seeking us out. Aphrodite was always a destination kind of shop. People come because they know it exists. We have shortened the distance for our Pictou County base and we have given our Antigonish customers a reason for visiting Pictou while making a day of it. Our Halifax customers are grateful for the shorter distance. So far son good!
We could not be in a more welcoming community – Aphrodite has been embraced with open arms by the community including local community leaders and other business owners. Pictou is a town with a bright vision for its future and we’re so pleased to be a part of that. Our location in the Old Foundry building is totally cool with a wide open space and ceilings that practically reach the clouds. We have scaled down the operation somewhat and we are now open only three days a week – Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 11 – 5 but we will increase our hours for the holiday season. Harry the dog is with us every day and he’s making new friends with the cats next door.
In the meantime the store looks great! With our new digs I have sought out some new product lines in addition to our established favourites. We have brought in some beautiful new jewellery collections – all in keeping with our mantra of handmade and artisanal creations. This one is from independent jewellery designer Denise Peacock and features fresh water pearls.
Art is on every wall and I am featuring some my new photographs as well. This holiday season brings us new knit collections including some exquisite cashmere sweaters and wraps.
Just arrived is the second installment of Lyssee leggings detailed in unexpected ways and in soft suede finishes with coordinating vests. There are some lovely sweater coats and vests in heavy knits that bring that edge to your outfit while keeping you warm. Try a sweater vest over a cozy sweater and you won’t need a coat. We have some stunning finely pleated silk scarves in an array of gorgeous colours at unbelievable low price points. We still carry a great selection of Yummy Tummy camisoles that are totally flattering and comfortable. If you want something just a little more amped up we are expecting some gorgeous lace cami’s that can be worn on their own or under a sheer blouse or fine sweater. They are too pretty to hide altogether. Also new is a small line of velvet kimono style jackets that are simply stunning.
At the risk of making this the longest blog ever, I still have lots of news. Jake Chisholm is back working with us part time and so is Marie Langille, beloved fashionista advisor over the years. The rest of the crew is still with us and we’re still having fun!
Here we are at the DeCoste Centre with Troy and Jenny Greencorn and Alan Syliboy after the amazing Buffy Saint Marie concert.
Shelley MacDonald Ulu Earrings: Since the Kate Middleton effect these earrings are a a must have! Shelley handcrafts these pieces and the demand supersedes the supply. Purchase or order now from Aphrodite to have them for Christmas. We also have more of her work.
Christmas at the DeCoste Centre: Saturday, November 18 and Sunday the 19th. The whole town of Pictou joins in for a festive holiday weekend! Aphrodite will open that Sunday too! www.decostecentre.ca Take in some of the other Christmas concerts like the comedy show TIS THE SEASON 11 featuring hilarious comedians Bette MacDonald and Maynard Morrison. Bette’s an Aphrodite goddess!
Other must sees and must reads.
A Family Place: This is a beautiful book written by my great friend Charles Gaines that chronicles his family’s search for what is important in life, and the joy and heartbreak they found along the way. It all takes place in our environs in northern Nova Scotia. You may recognize some of the characters. www.chapters.indigo.ca/en-ca/books/a-family-place-a-man/9781510717886-item.html
Discovery Channel – Last Stop Garage: Mondays at 9 and Thursdays at 7. I can’t stop plugging this show about my friends garage in Labrador. Unless you don’t like laughing – then you better skip it. Melinda in the middle is an Aphrodite goddess too!
Hurtling Towards Happiness: A Mother and Teenage Son’s Road Trip From Blues to Bonding in a Really Small Car! This is a wonderful new book by Claudia Hunter Johnson about a her journey with her teenage son. You all remember Claudia who worked with us during her sojourns in Antigonish. Congratulations to her on this remarkable achievement! www.hurtlingtowardshappiness.com This just in – a book review from the New York Times! https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/10/books/review/memoirs-take-the-wheel-finn-murphy-the-long-haul.html?_r=0
